The Ism

Episode 1: Reparations

I decided to take advantage of the Audio feature to record my first episode of a new series I’m doing called “The Ism.” The Ism is a collection of audio essays and monologues where I’ll be addressing certain topics relevant to economics, geology, and whatever else is on my mind. I’ma just be speaking the real. Giving y’all some real IZM. The ism can be interpreted how you want. Capitalism, racism, cynicism, it’s all the same. For some this may be your first time hearing my voice. This is unfiltered and a great way for me to express myself in my natural way of speaking. I hope you all enjoy.

This excerpt Madlib sampled was pulled from a Mayoral debate in Tampa in 2017. It’s been about 7 years since this soundbite originally hit the internet, but I felt urged to address the topic because of the arrogance in his tone. It spoke to me. And I felt it was necessary to share my opinion on the topic as a whole. I’m aware that this video has been broken down and commented on a bunch of times. But this debate about reparations continues to come up, so I knew it was important for me to reiterate things we should already be aware of.

We deserve it all because it’s ours. This idea of reparations is not something we will realistically receive from the American government because they view the Black community as a responsibility. We aren’t viewed as equal human beings with the right to this land we occupy. Otherwise we would have gotten the 40 acres originally promised after the Civil War. Excuse my jail references in this piece, I’m just a bit institutionalized so that’s my best way of relating these concepts to a circumstance in which I understand well. What it means to be a “nigga” is to be stripped of our understanding of our true history so that we are comfortable with scraps. But I ain’t comfortable with scraps, and I don’t advocate for fighting for scraps. I advocate for taking what we deserve. Everything. Just as Nat Turner sacrificed his life to do. Soon enough we gon be free. You might have to listen to this twice to really get it. Peace.

This economy is so predatory towards Black Americans. - Magnetic

A Nielsen report stated that Black consumer spending is highly influenced by advertising. Black people reported being 42 percent more likely than the rest of the American population to respond to mobile ads. They’re also more likely to respond to ads on television, radio and the Internet.1
